The first steps on a leash
- Letting the puppy wear a light collar or harness and leash indoors until it feels normal.
- Rewarding every step beside you, starting in a hallway or garage.
- Stopping when the leash tightens and moving on when it goes slack.
- Moving to the driveway and then a quiet street, one distraction at a time.
- Keeping outdoor trips short in hot weather and choosing shade when possible.

Good questions
Before you begin.
Collar or harness for a puppy?
Either can work. A well-fitted harness spreads pressure across the chest, and a flat collar holds ID tags. Ask a trainer which fits your puppy's size and your goals.
Why does my puppy sit down and refuse to walk?
New gear and new places can feel strange. Lure forward with a treat, keep sessions brief and avoid pulling the puppy along. Many pups relax after a few calm tries.
How soon should we walk outside?
Once your veterinarian clears outings. Until then, practice indoors and in your own yard so the skill is ready.
What about walking on hot pavement?
Place the back of your hand on the ground for several seconds. If it is uncomfortable for you, it is too hot for a puppy's paws. Walk early or late, or choose grass.
